Self Defence without a Tazer for Canadians

In Canada, a stun gun , is a restricted weapon.   Police officers can have it and are permitted to use it – as anyone who read about the horrible actions of the RCMP in the Vancouver airport knows, but a Taser or stun gun , pepper spray or Mace are not allowed as a Canadian self defense product.

That applies right across the country .

Many people do not agree that the inability of the average Canadian man or woman to arm themselves with these less lethal weapons is right , but the basic truth remains – that is our law and we must comply or pay the price .  But for Canadians who are concerned for their own personal safety but can’t buy any of these self defense products – are there options?

How can we protect kids who are preparing to leave home and live at school ?  Campus security is a huge worry for lots of parents.  Are there any good concepts that will help out ?

Happily , yes there are some sensible ideas and there are even products that you can carry legally in Canada,   to defend yourself from urban predators.  One product that anyone can use is a simple personal alarm.  Will it frighten away a ruthless criminal or immediately gather a crowd to rescue you?  Sadly , my guess is probably no .  But a defense alarm could suitably provide you or someone you love with the advantage of surprise and a couple of helpful seconds to escape. While it won’t stop a hardened criminal or true psychopath- it might be enough to give someone with a few too many drinks under their belt a wake up call to think about what they’re doing.  And you might be surprised, but there actually are people who will respond to an alarm .

As the defense products business in Canada isn’t very big (having all the expensive items as unmarketable gets in the way ) even personal alarms are not all that easy to find.  Also, they’re rather pricey to buy from the United States since you’ll usually pay considerably more to ship them up here than they would normally cost .    But there is at least one Self Defense kit for Canada on the market and it features a personal/room alarm and a pepper spray developed for dog attacks.

While regular pepper spray produced for human attackers is illegal in the hands of “civilians” , it’s perfectly legal to carry dog spray.  Mail delivery carries routinely have it .
